Financial Record Keeping and Management

Budgeting:  Kate Speer

This workshop presents discussion of four types of budgets with in-depth examination of line item budget and program-based budgets.  Session will review methods of allocation, administrative overhead, and shared costs.  The financial reports needed to monitor income and expenses on an ongoing basis will be discussed.

Board members carry a big responsibility in their oversight management of the finances of any organization.  Learn what to ask for from the staff and accountants to help you stay in touch with and on top of the finances of your organization. 

Quickbooks – Simple Start: David Hemphill

Understanding basic bookkeeping and the importance of the Balance Sheet are the starting point of sound financial policy and will be covered first.  Then, utilizing training software and materials provided by Intuit, the developers of Quickbooks, and using the computers at the Estes Park Library, the workshop uses real data to teach entry and report-making skills.  First-time users of Quickbooks will learn how to install and set up their own system, make appropriate entries, and produce reports for the Board and other agencies.

This course is for those who have essentially mastered the Beginners course and who want to learn payroll and other advanced Quickbooks skills.

Board and Staff Education

Board Development: Kate Speer and Frank Shavlik

This workshop will provide a series of guidelines that will hopefully make the entire process of selecting and training of Board members simple, straightforward and ultimately successful.  But Board members are human beings, and this infinitely complicates the process.  Topics include board functions, legal and operational responsibilities, suggested structure and committees, finding and selecting new members, training and orientation, problem board members, and some suggestions on other sources, including the internet.

Fundraising

Principles of Fund Raising: Bob Dickeson

This workshop will cover the 14 key tenents of fund raising, and provide an opportunity for an interactive consultation on your program’s development opportunities.  The role of board members in fund raising is emphasized. 

Researching Foundations for fun and PROFIT: Nonprofit Resource Center Volunteers

The Resource Center at the Library has purchased on-line access to the largest national databanks, the Foundation Center in NYC, and also makes available on line, as well as in print, the largest regional data bank, the Colorado Grants Guide, compiled by the Community Resource Center in Denver.  Both of these are available for you to use – free, at a computer in the Estes Park Library, or for a small fee at your home or office computer.  The workshop will focus on how best to utilize the depth and breadth of these data bases, as well as help you understand the general mindset and funding approaches of foundations.
